Whocast #42 - 02.22.06

Doctor Who Themes - Part Three

K.I.S.S.
(Keep It Simple, Stupid)...

And that's what I tried to do with the Final Episode of The Theme Podcasts.

I go over the theme from the 1996 TV Movie (8th Doctor), Series 2 (9th Doctor) and the Christmas Invasion (10th Doctor).

Hope you enjoyed these episodes. I will get back on track with more reviews, by myself and you in the next Whocasts.

Until then...Enjoy!

Re. Big Finish Themes...

The Big Finish stories had a version of the classic theme for the 5th, 6th and 7th Doctor audios, until using the Howell, McCollough or Glynn themes for the appropriate Doctor starting with Jubilee (#40). They used shorter versions of the theme between episodes partly to save licensing fees, and also partly, I think, to mix it up a bit.

For the first season of 8th Doctor audios there was a teaser version of the Arnold theme played before the teaser scene after which the openning theme would play.

FINALLY! I find a good Doctor Who podcast! Saves me having to do it myself. Am about to listen to all I can, and will reccomend this show to my other Who-friend.

Another great podcast on the theme tunes, I've really enjoyed these. I think my favourite out of these ones is the 9th Doctor. I didn't really like the TVM version (I didn't like the piano bits either let alone the movie) and I thought the 8th Doctors Big Finish theme tune was alot better, very distinctive.

Thanks, Dan!

I agree with the Murray Gold (9th Doctor) theme as being the best. McCoy's would be 2nd.

The Big Finish themes for Paul McGann are also done quite well.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info, Taras.

I also have enjoyed your reviews over on Doctor Who: Podshock. You ought to think about doing some of your own podcasts. Also feel free to send some of your reviews to our podcasts to get them out for all the listeners.

The John Debney TV movie variation sounds a lot better in its (slightly hard to find) album version.

The thing about the Murray Gold version for the 9th Doctor is that his orchestration actually brings the theme full circle -- Ron Grainer originally orchestrated it for a small string and percussion section in addition to Delia Derbyshire's work (that last name is pronounced DARBY-shuh by the way.) On hearing Derbyshire's production he announced that as far as he was concerned it was complete, and he cancelled the secondary session.

He also was heard to marvel at the piece and ask the question, "Did I actually compose this?!"

I have here, to my amusement, a 1960s orchestral recording, by a well known group at the time, of the theme that is perhaps the most bizarre straight attempt I've yet heard (I except such things as the quartet arrangement by Catgut Yr Tongue, which is quite whacky.)
