Whocast Special Edition #3 - 08.11.05

You notice how I get the RSS/XML feed finished well before the Blogspot (no pun intended) is put up. Sorry about that! I was going to do it at work and got caught up in the REAL WORLD!!!

But this podcast is nothing but emails, Emails, and EMAILS!!! I love doing dissertations on your emails!

Keep them coming!!! I'll be updating the HTML portion of this page to get the links that I've talked about on this and previous podcasts!!!

Enjoy!

Choosing a "Best of" list of stories to introduce someone to Who is difficult, made more so by the time since broadcast (production standards were a lot different back in the 1960s, and Doctor Who never really got much money to spend). However, below are 3 extant stories per Doctor which will give a flavour to that era of Who. I don't pretend it to be definitive, nor are they necessarily the "Top 3" from each Doctor.

Hartnell - Daleks, Marinus, Time Meddler
Troughton - Tomb, Seeds, War Games
Pertwee - Daemons, Green Death, Three Doctors
BakerT - Pyramids, Talons, Genesis
Davison - Androzani, Orchid, Awakening
BakerC - Revelation, Two Doctors, Mark
McCoy - Remembrance, Fenric, Ghost Light

Incidentally, if you're looking for links to Who-based websites, take a peek at:

I thought I'd post my top stories for each of the Doctors. I've not seen/heard all the stories though.

Hartnell - The Daleks, Marco Polo, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Chase, The War Machines and The Tenth Planet.

Troughton - The Power of the Daleks, Tomb of the Cybermen, The Mind Robber, The Invasion and The War Games.

Pertwee - Spearhead from Space, The Silurians, The Daemons, The Three Doctors, The Green Death, The Time Warrior and Planet of the Spiders.

Tom Baker - Genesis of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons, The Robots of Death, City of Death, Meglos and The Keeper of Traken.

Davison - The Caves of Androzani.

Colin Baker - Haven't seen/heard any of his stories.

McCoy - Remembrance of the Daleks and Survival.

Outside the tv realm, the range of stories is such that it's more difficult to single out top stories.

Big Finish only do stories with the original Doctors (Unbound stories notwithstanding), so performances are limited to the 5th-8th Doctors (and to a slight extent, the 3rd).

Stories worth listening to:

5th - Spare Parts, Loups Garoux
6th - Jubilee, The One Doctor
7th - Bang Bang a Boom (if you like S24), Master (if you prefer the darker McCoy)
8th - Chimes of Midnight, Time of the Daleks

In response to your listener who wanted some good choices of Who to rekindle the fire...

In his e-mail, it was mentioned that he had Pyramids of Mars, which I think is probably one of, if not the best story to introduce new fans to. Very accessible and entertaining. It's got some hints of backstory but not enough that it will lose new fans.

If he's looking for reviews of stories by fans for fans, he can surf over to the Dr Who Ratings Guide. http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/

Good stuff. And they let me write for them and I used to run some sections of it.

OK, as for stories, I am looking at this list and there are some good recommendations here. I will add my two cents.

Hartnell--An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, Dalek Invasion of Earth
Troughton--Tomb of the Cybermen, Seeds of Death, War Games, Mind Robber
Pertwee-Spearhead from Space, Inferno, Mind of Evil, Daemons, Curse of Peladon, Time Warrior, Carnival of Monsters
T. Baker--Ark in Space, Genesis of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons, Pyramids of Mars, Deadly Assassin, Robots of Death, Leisure Hive, Full Circle
Davison--Caves of Androzani, Mawdryn Undead, Earthshock if only for the significance of it in the canon...it's a pretty subpar story otherwise.
Colin Baker--Vengeance on Varos, Two Doctors, Revelation of the Daleks
McCoy--Dragonfire, Remembrance, Greatest Show, Ghost Light, Fenric.

I've only heard a few of the Big Finish audios but I highly recommend Spare Parts (5th Doctor) and The Holy Terror (6th Doctor).

Hi, I love the podcast and and think they're very well done. I guess i have one basic question.

How are you seeing the Dr. Who episodes in the states. I just ordered volumes 1-3 from Amazon UK but from listening to your podcast and another Dr. Who podcast it seems as if there is a way to get them as they air. Both casts i listen to (yours included) seem to be viewing the episodes even though both podcasts are based in the states,

Is there a special way to get the episodes on sattelite somehow? I guess I just want to know how you guys get the show.

Thanks. I've been a longtime Dr Who fan and grew up on the Tom Baker Doctor.

Most likely it's the good old Internet...

Episode 1 (or rather, a pre-transmission version of it) was available on p2p networks well before it even aired in the UK.

Once the series started proper, each episode was on the networks within a few hours of transmission.

Course if you live near the Canadian/US border, a persion in the States could also catch it on the CBC.

Or Tom could always be pretending ;p

Just in case anyone's feeling guilty over watching the internet-posted episodes, here's something for your dyspepsia:

I ordered all of the season 27 DVDs from the UK this weekend, so even though I didn't pay for a TV license to see the series, I'm feeding the BBC nonetheless. I have a running policy to buy any series I watch all of on the internet. Others I have bought recently: BSG and PLANETES. Since no one would release it here, I sure wish the BBC would release the DVDs as Region 1! Until then I will have to live with Region 2s.

I hope the DVDs come with some extras, specifically, the Doctor Who Confidential specials... I guess we'll see when they get here Sept. 13-15...

Of course you could live in the UK. We civilised people can watch WHO when we want!!DVD's VHS, cable and satellite etc... Plus we can go to either Brighton or Blackpool and see the magnificent exhibitions, (yes, I've touched the real Bessie!)

Wow, the best stories? that is really difficult. How about the Dr Who Bummers? Is there anywhere a story as bad as 'Timelash' or 'Dragonfire' Another great Podcast Tom. We appreciate your hard work!

Having caught up with all the podcasts a few weeks ago, it's made the gap between editions seem a lot longer.

My iTunes feeds are getting low with no new podcastwho to pull!

The DVDs that are being released now are vanilla ones--just the eps. No extras.

There is a box set slated to come out in November that has a lot of extras, but the Confidentials will not be part of it....I think there are issues with clearances and rights that would make the cost prohative...

Brad said...

So I should have waited for a box set?! ARG!!! Nothing but frustration!!

I would expect the main reason for the issues with DWC not getting a DVD release will be with the music which was likely licensed for tv broadcast only.

The November box set does have a special DWC episode on it, but I would expect it to be similar in style to the ones which were screened pre-Rose and pre-TPOTW, and be essentially DWC remixed, maybe with some bits of material from after the series started transmission.

It sounds like that the Confidentials on the Boxed set will be cut down to 15 minute episodes rather than 30 minutes like they were originally broadcast. More on that on tonight's podcast...Yes, you heard right...TONIGHT'S PODCAST!!! (09/04)

Well..

Over here, whilst the first run of DWC was 30min eps, the repeats from about halfway through moved to a 15min DWC condensed format (although 30min eps have been repeated occasionally since).
These 15min eps are essentially the same as the full ones, but with most of the Classic Series stuff excised (and hence many of the old actors too), and quite a bit of the musical "interludes" removed.

That said, the Beeb are still saying that the box set features an exclusive episode of DWC, so I'd be expecting something akin to the documentaries that preceded Rose and TPOTW.
